Spectral MD Burn Imaging

Spectral MD was developing a technology for distinguishing between the living and necrotic tissue found on severe burns. An imaging head, elaborate UI and large computer hardware volume led to the creation of a cart system. To improve use this design was made relatively thin and tall, reducing the storage footprint.

Understanding the workflow helped lay the foundation for the industrial design as well as future development of the digital user experience.

Simple sketch concepts were used to determine suitable directions with engineers, leading to the creation of full-scale prototypes to assess ease of use and appearance. With hands-on feedback we moved back to 2D sketches to confirm the design direction and continued on to final CAD.

While maintaining a small footprint the device nonetheless needed to provide for use across an OR table.
